Epicure - 'Till My Wallet Runs Dry

Epicure is a reggae/rock band from Santa Cruz and this is there first album with a major label and I think they managed to do a great job. I only wish the second half of the album was as outstanding as the first half, but defidently still worth a listen!

Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Aesop Rock's latest work None Shall Pass. A decent album with a few good songs such as Coffee and None Shall Pass. Overall I prefer his previous works, but give this a listen its still very good.

The Go! Team is an insanely hyper upbeat mish mash of a million different sounds that all seem to work together so well.

God Loves Ugly is the third LP by the Minneapolis based hip-hop duo Atmosphere. Slug (pictured above) often raps about personal accounts of his life and his difficult, often destructive relationships with women.

Seven's Travels marks Atmosphere's mainstream success debut. Trying to Find A Balance and National Disgrace were made into singles and videos were made for both.

Either/Or, my personal favorite Elliott Smith album, was released in 1997 and is his third CD. Three of the songs were featured in the Good Will Hunting soundtrack (Angeles, Say Yes, and Between the Bars).

XO marks Elliott Smith's major label debut on DreamWorks records. Released only a year after Either/Or, it has more up-tempo songs with drums. While this does slightly take away from the usual 'a guy singing with a guitar' sound of Elliott Smith, it's not to say the songs aren't excellent.

There's not much to be said here. Ear Bleeding Country is the best of Dinosaur Jr., the alternative rock band from Massachusetts. Being fans of Nirvana, they have a distinctive sound characterized by their extensive use of feedback and distortion and J Mascis' nasal voice. My favorites are In A Jar, Freak Scene, Repulsion, and the horn led I'm Insane.

Dinosaur Jr.- Ear Bleeding Country

Beyond is Dinosaur Jr.'s first album since 1998, but it's like Mascis, Barlow, and Murph all took a time machine back to when they played together to record this album. Their trademark sound is definitely still intact here. It was released on May 1st of this year, although it was leaked four months prior. Personal favorites include Back to Your Heart, Almost Ready, and We're Not Alone.

Ugly Casanova is Isaac Brock's (of Modest Mouse) side project. They sound like a sometimes more up tempo Modest Mouse with more instruments. Things I Don't Remember is my favorite song.

The Smiths are really good. Band members include now Modest Mouse's Johnny Marr and the new solo Morrissey. They're from the 80's era, but the music and lyrics are still legit today. My personal favorites are How Soon Is Now, I Want the One I Can't Have, and The Headmaster Ritual.

I discovered At the Drive-In early last summer when I first heard the extremely catchy song on Relationship of Command, One Armed Scissor. The last album ATD-I produced before breaking up and my favorite. A must have.

Leaked! Personally, I think this new MtB LP, available this August, is great. When the band lost keyboardist/producer Matt Bayles, I was skeptical to find out what this glitch rock fivesome would sound like. The answer? Well, not a hell of a lot different. I definitely recommend it.

Destroyer's Rubies is about a year old by now, I'm pretty sure. They have their own unique style of indie rock and their vocalist, Dan Bejar, is from The New Pornographers. I find the style of Destroyer is hard to categorize, but Bejar likes to call it "European Blues". Their lyrics are like cryptic peoms, but the guitars are generally upbeat and Dan Bejar's voice is nasally. I don't know if nasally is a word.

From what I've seen on the internets, Moros Eros is relatively unknown, especially when compared to most of the other indie acts on this blog. The four members came together in 2005 to begin recording I Saw the Devil..., and with impressive results. They have a powerful, good vocalist who you can almost always understand, guitar riffs that will get stuck in your head, and my personal favorite, a talented drummer that keeps everything together. Watch their single Today is the Day below...

A laid back MC reppin' the NYC. In the first song he states, "Party people in the place to be, This is Cool Calm Pete, I'm a do this in G-Minor" If you cant see in awesome in that, then you don't know what good rap is. As you can tell from the cover art, he's Korean, but his voice is nice and the beats are filled to the brim with originality. On another note, many of the tracks are perfect for Summer kick-backs.

Equal parts Beatles, Beach Boys, and even the Shins, Dr. Dog have a seriously retro sound that is incomparable in originality. Easy Beat times in at just under forty minutes where it was recorded in the band's personal studio, so there's no wonder why this disc has such a warm, raw sound. If someone told me this band was straight out of the sixties, I would believe them. Standouts include Oh No, The World May Never Know, Wake Up, and the title track Easy Beat.

Peter Bjorn and John's latest effort Writer's Block may be labeled as "indie-pop" or "folk-pop" or any other variation on the genre of pop, but this intrument packed LP is far from the "pop"ular music norm. Mixing catchy, just-in-time-for-Summer whistling, bongo drums, synth, mandolin...., etc with great lyrics and sometimes even funky beats (the excellent Amsterdam), these three Swedes know how to create pure bliss and put it on a CD. Highly Recommended nod your head and sing along type stuff, ya.

Aesop Rock records some brilliant underground rap tracks. Although you might not be able to understand the message he's trying to convey simply because his flow is so rapid, Labor Days is this MC's most approachable record, and I'm sure you'll like it if you like so called "real" rap. No Regrets tells a beautiful story. Daylight pokes at the faults of our world, as he repeats in the chorus "All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day, Put the pieces back together my way."

Indie-psychedelic - super catchy - contains five or six great gems, a whopping ten interludes, and like nine songs I didn't like. It's all very hit or miss, which is partially a good thing because there's always diversity from song to song. With 24 tracks in all, there's probably something you'll like here.
